Do We Actually Use Only 10% Of Our Brain?

The myth that we only use 10% of our brain has been around for a very long time.  Even one of the smartest person known to mankind, Albert Einstein, thought that we only use a certain percentage of our brain.  But this 10% theory is actually untrue.  So, where did this theory evolve from?  Well, the answer is, no one actually knows.  In order to understand some functions of the brain, let’s break it down by “lobes”.

  • Frontal lobe – location: the front of the brain; responsible for language, memory, and judgment
  • Temporal lobe – location: the side of the brain; responsible mainly for hearing
  • Parietal lobe – location: the top back of the brain; responsible for processing sensory information such as touch, taste, temperature, pain and pressure
  • Occipital lobe – location: the bottom back of the brain; responsible for vision

All of these lobes have nerves that run through them and are constantly working, even when you’re sleeping!  Our brain does everything for us, including breathing, feeling, moving, talking, blinking, controls our hunger, laughing, yawning, and so much more that you do on an everyday basis.  To think that only 10% of our brain is controlling our whole body is kind of cool, but it’s just untrue.  If you did an x-ray of the brain using an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), you’d clearly see that the whole brain is constantly activated.  So, if someone tells you that they’re only using 10% of their brain, you might want to ask them which 10% of the brain it is because now you know that the brain contains different lobes that clearly has different functions.
